Spanish newspaper Marca has revealed why João Félix was left out of Portugal’s lineup during their opening 2026 World Cup match against DR Congo.
Félix remained on the bench for the full game as Portugal were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw, raising questions over Roberto Martinez’s attacking choices.
According to Marca, the decision was tactical. Martinez chose to rely on other attacking options, with Félix currently lower in the pecking order than players such as Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva and Pedro Neto.
The report also claimed that competition from Rafael Leão and Francisco Conceição has made it harder for Félix to secure a regular role in Portugal’s attack.
Portugal’s lack of creativity against DR Congo made the decision more controversial, with the team struggling to find solutions in the final third.
Ricardo Quaresma criticised the call and said Félix deserves more opportunities, while Peter Schmeichel also questioned why influential attacking players were left out.
Marca suggested Félix’s absence may have been linked to technical reasons, including wing speed and team cohesion.
The report added that Félix could be handed a bigger role in Portugal’s next match against Uzbekistan as Martinez looks to improve his side’s attacking display.
