Tino Livramento has been ruled out of England’s World Cup campaign after suffering a calf injury, with Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah called up as his replacement.
The Newcastle United full-back sustained the injury during England training on Sunday, days before the team’s World Cup opener against Croatia on Wednesday at 21:00 BST.
Livramento’s tournament involvement had already been uncertain after the 23-year-old missed the final five weeks of the season with a thigh injury.
Trevoh Chalobah Called Into England World Cup Squad
Chalobah is travelling to England’s training camp in Kansas City while the rest of Thomas Tuchel’s squad head to Dallas.
However, the 26-year-old will not join the group until after England’s opening match against Croatia.
World Cup rules allow an outfield player suffering a serious injury or illness to be replaced up to 24 hours before their team’s first match begins.
Chalobah has earned one England cap. His only appearance came in June 2025, when he played the full 90 minutes of a friendly against Senegal.
The Chelsea defender was also named on the bench for several World Cup qualifiers under Tuchel.
England’s Right-Back Options After Livramento Injury
Livramento made his England debut under Gareth Southgate in November 2024. He has since featured five times under Tuchel, including two starts.
He played the second half of England’s 1-0 warm-up victory over New Zealand but remained on the bench against Costa Rica.
Reece James is Tuchel’s first-choice right-back, although his fitness has also been questioned following an injury-hit season. The Chelsea captain missed nine matches near the end of the campaign due to a hamstring injury.
Djed Spence and Ezri Konsa are the other defensive options already included in the England World Cup squad.
Spence can play on either side and has made six appearances under Tuchel. Konsa, primarily a centre-back, has played 11 times under the England manager, starting nine matches.
Like Konsa, Chalobah’s preferred position is centre-back.
His World Cup call-up also completes a long-held ambition. On the day of the 2018 World Cup final, the then-19-year-old posted: “One day #Believe.”
