Real Madrid have officially announced the signing of Spain international and former Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella on a long-term contract that will keep him at the Santiago Bernabéu until 2032.
While the club has not disclosed the official transfer fee, reports indicate that Real Madrid agreed to pay an initial €55 million, with an additional €5 million available through performance-related bonuses.
The arrival of Cucurella marks Real Madrid’s first major signing of the summer transfer window as the club continues its ambitious squad rebuild under newly appointed manager José Mourinho.
Mourinho Influences Cucurella Move to Madrid
José Mourinho, who recently returned to Real Madrid following Álvaro Arbeloa’s departure, reportedly played a crucial role in convincing Cucurella to join the Spanish giants.
The 27-year-old defender is currently with the Spain national team in the United States, preparing for their opening FIFA World Cup 2026 match against Cabo Verde.
Real Madrid are also expected to strengthen further this summer, with reports suggesting agreements are already in place for Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté, Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva, and Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries.
Long-Awaited Return to Spanish Football
Cucurella had been eager to return to Spain and attracted interest from both Barcelona and Atlético Madrid. However, Real Madrid moved swiftly to secure the deal after Mourinho identified the versatile left-back as a key addition to his squad.
Barcelona reportedly explored the possibility of re-signing their former academy graduate earlier this year but focused their transfer priorities elsewhere. Atlético Madrid also showed serious interest before Real Madrid completed negotiations.
From La Masia to the Bernabéu
Born in Catalonia, Cucurella came through Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy and made his senior debut during the 2017-18 season.
After successful spells at Eibar and Getafe, he established himself as one of Spain’s most promising full-backs before earning a move to Brighton & Hove Albion. Chelsea signed him in 2022 in a deal worth approximately €65 million.
During his time at Stamford Bridge, Cucurella made 163 appearances and helped Chelsea win both the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup.
Frustration at Chelsea Before Transfer
Despite his success, Cucurella reportedly became frustrated with Chelsea’s lack of progress and publicly questioned several decisions made by the club’s hierarchy.
Following Chelsea’s UEFA Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain earlier this year, the Spanish defender expressed disappointment over the club’s direction and ambitions.
His comments fueled speculation about a potential departure, with Real Madrid ultimately emerging as the frontrunner for his signature.
Focus Shifts to World Cup 2026
With his future now settled, Cucurella can fully focus on Spain’s World Cup campaign, where he is expected to remain Luis de la Fuente’s first-choice left-back.
The defender played a pivotal role in Spain’s UEFA Euro 2024 triumph and became a fan favorite after famously dyeing his hair red following the victory over England in the final.
As he begins a new chapter with Real Madrid, Cucurella arrives as one of the club’s most significant summer acquisitions and is expected to play a key role in Mourinho’s plans for the upcoming La Liga and UEFA Champions League campaigns.
