Mexico City Schools Closed And Remote Work Ordered For World Cup Opener

Schools in Mexico City will be closed on Thursday as the city prepares for the opening match of the World Cup.

The decision was announced ahead of Mexico’s tournament opener against South Africa at the Azteca Stadium.

Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum has issued a decree to help reduce traffic around the capital city on matchday.

All schools in Mexico City, including public and private schools at every level, will be closed for the day.

Federal government workers have also been told to work from home. The private sector has been encouraged to allow remote working for non-essential activities.

President Sheinbaum said the decree was introduced so the opening ceremony can take place without traffic problems on World Cup day.

Government officials said the measures are also meant to improve road safety and make it easier for residents and tourists to move around the city.

The rules will only apply on the opening day of the tournament.

Mexico will host South Africa at the Azteca Stadium on Thursday, June 11.
