If he starts in Toronto, Neuer will move clear of France’s Hugo Lloris and become the most-capped goalkeeper in World Cup history.
The 40-year-old equalled Lloris’ record of 20 appearances during Germany’s opening win over Curacao. Neuer had come out of international retirement to play at his fifth World Cup.
Neuer made his World Cup debut in 2010 and has remained Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper for much of that period.
He was also part of the Germany team that won the tournament in 2014.
With two more appearances still possible later in the competition, Neuer could extend the record even further if Germany continue their campaign.
