Thiago Alcantara is set to depart Barcelona’s coaching staff at the end of the 2025/26 season, according to a report from respected transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.
The former Spain international joined Hansi Flick’s backroom team at the beginning of the current campaign, taking on responsibilities covering tactical preparation and the organisation of training sessions at the Catalan club.
Thiago’s transition into coaching came swiftly after he announced his retirement from professional football in 2024. His playing career was decorated and wide-ranging — he rose through La Masia and represented Barcelona’s first team between 2009 and 2013 before going on to win numerous honours at FC Bayern Munich.
He later joined Liverpool FC, where he spent three seasons, and earned 46 caps for Spain, scoring twice for the national side.
Despite settling into his new role at Barcelona, Thiago attracted external interest during the season. Levante UD made a formal approach to appoint him as their head coach in December, but he chose to remain in Catalonia and see out the season alongside Flick’s staff.
His pending exit at the season’s conclusion leaves a gap in Flick’s backroom structure heading into the summer. Barcelona are currently competing in La Liga under Flick, and the club will need to assess their staffing options as preparations for the 2026/27 campaign begin.
Whether Thiago pursues a head coaching opportunity with Levante’s interest already on record or seeks another role within the game remains to be seen, but his departure marks the end of his first chapter in football management.
