Arsenal’s chances of signing Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid this summer now look more difficult.
The Argentine forward has been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his attack before the new season. Arsenal are aiming to build a squad capable of competing strongly again in the Premier League.
According to reports, Arsenal have had a long-term interest in Alvarez. The Gunners considered a move for him last summer before deciding to sign Viktor Gyokeres instead.
Alvarez stayed at Atletico Madrid and had a strong season. He scored 20 goals in 49 appearances in all competitions, including one goal against Arsenal in the Champions League.
There have been several reports claiming that Alvarez could leave Atletico this summer. However, Spanish outlet Cadena SER has not ruled out the possibility of him staying at the club for at least one more season.
Interest in Alvarez is now growing. Real Madrid have joined Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain in the race for the forward.
According to the report, Real Madrid made an offer worth £129 million for Alvarez, but Atletico Madrid rejected it.
A statement said that Real Madrid made a €150 million offer to Atletico Madrid for the player. Atletico thanked Real Madrid for the offer but rejected it and pointed to Alvarez’s release clause.
Reports claim Alvarez’s release clause is worth €500 million, which is around £429 million. That price would make a deal very difficult for Real Madrid, Arsenal, or any other interested club.
Arsenal’s most expensive signing remains Declan Rice, who joined from West Ham for £105 million in the summer of 2023.
The situation may be even more difficult for Arsenal because Sky Sports has claimed Alvarez would prefer to join Barcelona.
For now, Arsenal’s interest in Alvarez remains complicated, with major competition from other clubs and Atletico Madrid holding firm over the player’s value.
