France boss Didier Deschamps says Paul Pogba’s return to Les Bleus is possible but insists the midfielder must first prove himself on the pitch with Monaco.

The 32-year-old is closing in on his long-awaited comeback after serving an 18-month ban for doping, having signed a two-year deal with Ligue 1 side Monaco over the summer. Pogba broke down in tears during his unveiling and has made clear his ambition to feature at the 2026 World Cup in the USA.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Deschamps admitted Pogba’s desire to play for France again is not in doubt, but outlined the steps required before a recall.
“He wants it and it’s a goal in his mind, I have no doubt,” Deschamps said. “The next one is when he has the Monaco jersey and sets foot on the pitch. I hope it goes well for him. After that, we’ll see.”
Deschamps also stressed the need for caution when asked directly about a national team return:
“If I say yes, it will be: ‘Wow, Pogba’s back.’ If I say no, I’ll look like an idiot, so that’s not going to work either.”
It has been over three years since Pogba’s last France appearance, coming on as a substitute in a 5-0 win over South Africa in March 2022, where he assisted Wissam Ben Yedder’s goal.
Monaco put together a three-month training program over the summer to help the former Juventus star rebuild fitness after two years without action. Head coach Adi Hütter confirmed this week that Pogba could be named in his first squad after the international break, with a potential debut pencilled in for October 18 against Angers.
For Pogba, the first step is simply playing again. For Deschamps, the challenge is balancing optimism with realism as France prepare for another World Cup cycle.
