Thomas Muller Becomes Germany’s Most Successful Player After Vancouver Whitecaps Title Win

Thomas Muller has officially become Germany’s most successful footballer, overtaking Toni Kroos, after winning the Canadian Championship with Vancouver Whitecaps.

The former Bayern Munich star lifted his 35th career trophy as the Whitecaps beat Vancouver FC 4-2 in the final, moving him one clear of Real Madrid legend Kroos, who retired in 2024 with 34 titles.

Muller played a starring role in the victory, assisting in the fifth minute before converting a penalty in the 10th to give his side a 2-0 lead. He was substituted in the 79th minute to a standing ovation from the home crowd.

Despite making history, the 35-year-old downplayed the milestone when speaking to Bild:

“I’d rather say: ‘Germany’s most successful title hoarder.’ The question is always: How do you weight these titles? One player wins the national championship more often, while the other has more Champions League victories. Statistics are a nice thing, nothing more and nothing less. I don’t play football for my ‘title legacy,’ but because I simply love being on the pitch.”

Muller’s tally includes 13 Bundesliga titles and two Champions League crowns with Bayern Munich, while Kroos boasts six Champions League triumphs with Bayern and Real Madrid.

Having joined Vancouver Whitecaps in the summer, Muller now has a chance to add even more silverware. His team are level on points with San Diego at the top of the MLS Western Conference and could secure a top playoff seed as they prepare to face San Jose Earthquakes this weekend.
