Chester, Pennsylvania is celebrating as the Philadelphia Union have secured the Supporters’ Shield for the second time in franchise history after a 1-0 win against rivals NYCFC at Subaru Park.

Mikael Uhre scored the decisive goal in the 40th minute, giving the Union an early lead and ensuring home-field advantage throughout the MLS playoffs.
The 2025 Shield marks Philadelphia’s second, following their first triumph during the COVID-affected 2020 season.
With 66 points and one regular-season match remaining, the Union have created an unassailable lead at the top of the Eastern Conference. Should they reach the MLS Cup Final on Dec. 6, Bradley Carnell’s squad will enjoy the benefit of hosting the decisive match.

Philadelphia will start their postseason journey against the East Wild Card winner (No. 8 vs. No. 9 seed) in a best-of-three Round 1 series scheduled for late October, with the complete playoff schedule to be announced soon. In addition, the Union have also qualified for the 2026 CONCACAF Champions Cup.
The Union’s win had an immediate impact on rivals NYCFC, who were pushed out of home playoff spots and now sit fifth in the Eastern Conference standings.
Coming into the season, expectations for Philadelphia were modest. After parting ways with longtime manager Jim Curtin and moving on from several veteran players, many questioned the team’s prospects.

However, Carnell’s leadership transformed the squad, revitalizing players like Tai Baribo who became an MLS All-Star and implementing a strong defensive system. With only 33 goals conceded this season, Philadelphia has the league’s tightest defense.
Comparisons between the 2020 and 2025 Union sides show both similarities and differences. Both teams averaged roughly two points per game, though the 2025 side played 11 more matches.
Tai Baribo led this year with 16 goals, surpassing Kacper Przybyłko’s eight from 2020, and several USMNT players including Brenden Aaronson, Matt Freese, and Mark McKenzie featured on the earlier team.
