Former Juventus winger Federico Bernardeschi has added his voice to the never-ending Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo debate, describing the two legends as “opposites” while praising what makes them unique.
Speaking to Tuttosport, the Bologna star explained: “They’re two different worlds. Messi catches your eye, he does things that seem unreal, he has an aura that doesn’t belong in this world. Cristiano has another characteristic: he revolutionized football and sport in general. Messi, like Maradona, seems divine. If athletes today pay attention to every detail of their preparation, it’s thanks to Cristiano.”

Messi and Ronaldo dominated world football for nearly two decades, sharing 13 Ballons d’Or between them and pushing each other to unprecedented levels. Bernardeschi noted they “shared the same stage for 15 years,” etching their names permanently into football history.
Now in the twilight of their careers, the two icons are still making waves away from Europe. Ronaldo, 40, is starring for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia and chasing the landmark of 1,000 career goals, while also targeting one last World Cup with Portugal. Messi, meanwhile, fulfilled his ultimate dream in 2022 by lifting the World Cup with Argentina before joining Inter Miami in MLS.
The eternal debate over who is the true GOAT shows no sign of slowing — but Bernardeschi believes football is richer for having witnessed both.
