THE CONTEXT
After leaving Real Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti was appointed as Brazil’s new head coach, replacing Dorival Junior. His start included a goalless draw with Ecuador, a narrow win against Paraguay, and a dominant 3-0 victory over Chile.
The Selecao currently sit second in World Cup qualifying, 10 points behind Argentina.

BEYOND THE HEADLINES
Despite the progress, Abel Braga believes Ancelotti cannot bring the same passion or identity as a Brazilian coach.
Speaking to Globo Esporte, the 73-year-old stressed that all five of Brazil’s World Cup titles were won under local managers, and hiring from abroad undermines faith in domestic coaching.

BRAGA STATEMENT
Braga explained:
“It bothers me. I’m not talking about the quality of the person; everyone who knows him personally says he’s very good. It’s just that when you open his jacket, his skin isn’t green and yellow. The five world titles were won by Brazilians, so there’s a certain sadness, because no one believes in the Brazilian coach.”
He added:
“I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t think he’ll be a world champion. We’ll have to wait a little longer. That other generation, with Endrick, Estevao, those guys are going to conquer. They’re all outstanding.”

WHAT COMES NEXT
Brazil face Bolivia in their next qualifier. While results under Ancelotti have improved, pressure will continue to mount as expectations build toward the 2026 World Cup.
