Alan Shearer has urged Steven Gerrard to ignore the old “never go back” saying as the Liverpool legend’s name returns to the frame for the Rangers job.
Rangers are hunting for a new head coach after sacking Russell Martin earlier this month. The former Southampton boss was dismissed following a nightmare start to the season, managing just one win in seven Scottish Premiership matches.
Fans voiced their frustration with banners calling for his dismissal and protests at Ibrox, prompting the club to act after a 1-1 draw with Falkirk proved the final straw.
Gerrard had initially been in advanced talks to return to Rangers but withdrew from consideration. However, the door remains open, and he is once again among the frontrunners.
Speaking to Betfair, Shearer said: “There’s that ‘never go back’ saying, but if he wants to get back into management, he knows what it’s like up there. He’s done it and been successful before. Rangers are miles off it at the minute, and it’s no surprise Russell lost his job. The fans were going mad, but that’s the reality — if you don’t win games, you get sacked.”
Former Scotland international Pat Nevin told OLBG he backed Gerrard’s decision to step away, arguing the timing wasn’t right: “He’s the last one that won a title and stopped Celtic doing ten in a row. But walking in now, when they’re already behind in the league, would be incredibly tough.”
Ex-Manchester United bosses Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick have also been linked to the vacancy, along with Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna.
