Jamie Carragher Names David Raya Arsenal’s Best Signing Under Arteta

Jamie Carragher has hailed Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya as “one of the best pieces of business” under Mikel Arteta, calling him a “real upgrade” on Aaron Ramsdale.

Raya’s crucial first-half save helped Arsenal to a 2-0 Champions League win over Olympiacos at the Emirates, with goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka securing a perfect start of two wins from two in the group stage.

The Spaniard denied Daniel Podence with a brilliant stop to keep the score level, a moment Carragher believes underlined his quality.

“The Raya save… listen, I think he’s a brilliant goalkeeper,” Carragher said on CBS Sports. “This is one of the best pieces of business that Arsenal have done. He’s a real upgrade on Aaron Ramsdale. For me, it’s between him and Alisson in the Premier League for the best goalkeeper.”

Arteta also praised Raya after the game, admitting his save was “a key moment” when Olympiacos threatened. The Arsenal boss said his team “started really well” but “needed a big save” to hold their lead, while crediting his substitutes for “bringing another dimension” late on.

With clean sheets now becoming a regular feature of his performances, Raya looks firmly established as Arteta’s No.1 for the future. The Gunners will rely on his consistency as they balance Premier League and European ambitions, starting with this weekend’s clash against West Ham.
