Chelsea have made a late adjustment to their Champions League squad, taking advantage of a new UEFA regulation that allows clubs to replace injured players temporarily.
Earlier this summer, UEFA introduced the rule change, permitting teams to make a “temporary” registration if a player suffers a long-term injury or illness, up until the sixth matchday in December.
The decision, UEFA explained, was designed to “safeguard players from additional workload pressure and ensure squad lists are not unfairly reduced.”

Essugo injury opens the door
The Blues moved quickly to use the rule after Dario Essugo was sidelined for around 12 weeks with a thigh injury sustained on international duty with Portugal’s Under-21s. The midfielder has already undergone surgery.
In his place, Chelsea have registered Facundo Buonanotte, who joined on loan from Brighton during the summer. The 20-year-old had initially been left out of the European squad but now earns a late call-up.

Buonanotte’s Champions League dream alive
Buonanotte had spoken of his excitement at the prospect of playing in Europe’s elite competition when he signed for Chelsea.
“It’s a great first step in my career,” he said in an interview with the club. “Of course, I’ll get the opportunity to play in the Champions League for the first time, which will be a great challenge.”
Despite his enthusiasm, the Argentine was initially omitted in favour of Essugo, who officially joined the Blues in June. But Essugo’s setback now means Buonanotte will get his chance to make his Champions League bow.
Mixed start at Stamford Bridge
Buonanotte has already featured for Chelsea, making his debut in the 2-2 draw with Brentford last weekend. Manager Enzo Maresca gave him a starting role, but after a quiet first half, he was substituted at the interval for Tyrique George.
The youngster’s inclusion in the Champions League squad, however, represents an important opportunity for him to make an impression on the European stage as Chelsea continue their campaign under Maresca.
