Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has provided an update on Federico Chiesa after the winger missed Wednesday night’s Champions League win over Marseille.
Chiesa had been named on the substitutes’ bench for the clash in France but was forced to withdraw from the squad following the warm-up.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, Slot revealed the issue first emerged during training on Tuesday.
“Two or three minutes after you guys left yesterday, he stepped out of the training session.”
Despite the setback, Liverpool decided to travel with the Italy international, with Slot stressing that the problem is not expected to be serious.
“We took him with us because we don’t expect it to be a long-term injury.”
Slot explained that staying in Marseille overnight allowed Chiesa to continue his treatment, with hope he could still feature.
“Because we stay here tonight, we are here a bit longer. We thought it was good for him to have his treatment over here and we were hoping that maybe he would have been fit in time. But he wasn’t.”
The Liverpool boss confirmed that Chiesa attempted to take part in the warm-up but was ultimately ruled out.
“He tried in the warm-up and he wasn’t able to play. That’s why he wasn’t on the bench.”
