Marc-Andre ter Stegen has joined Girona on loan until June as Barcelona look to resolve the goalkeeper’s uncertain situation at the club.
Barcelona confirmed the decision was taken on sporting grounds, stressing that ter Stegen, a club captain with a contract running until 2028, agreed to the move. Despite being one of the highest earners in the squad, he is no longer viewed as part of the club’s long-term project, although all options remain open.
SPORT reports that the loan will allow ter Stegen to play regularly and showcase his value ahead of possible opportunities in Europe or Saudi Arabia later this year.
The club believes the move could increase his market value through performances with Girona and with the German national team at the upcoming World Cup. Barcelona are also open to flexibility around his contract, including potential salary savings or even a free transfer, with the final decision resting with the player.
Barcelona’s goalkeeping situation remains crowded. Joan Garcia is set as a priority, while Inaki Pena, Yaakobishvili, and Astralaga are all returning from loan spells.
The club does not plan to sign a new goalkeeper during this transfer window and intends to manage the position through internal movement.
