Harry Maguire is reportedly “increasingly likely” to commit his future to Manchester United by signing a new contract following a major turnaround under interim boss Michael Carrick.
The England defender’s current deal expires this summer, but his recent displays — including a strong partnership with Lisandro Martinez — have boosted his standing at Old Trafford.
The 32-year-old has also benefited from the injury setback suffered by Matthijs de Ligt, which reopened the door to regular minutes.
Maguire’s leadership and experience were appreciated by former manager Ruben Amorim, even if he was not always first choice. Despite the arrivals of centre-backs such as De Ligt and Leny Yoro in recent seasons, Maguire remained a dependable squad figure, featuring 40 times across all competitions last term and contributing four goals.
Now, the Daily Mail reports that United are ready to recognise his resurgence. It is described as “increasingly likely” that the ex-Leicester City captain will be offered fresh terms before his current contract runs down.
The defender presently earns £180,000 per week and is believed to be keen on extending his stay, having joined United in 2019 in an £80 million (€93.6m/$101.6m) move from Leicester. Discussions are expected to centre around reaching a compromise on salary and contract length. Since arriving, Maguire has made 260 appearances for the club, lifting the 2022-23 Carabao Cup and the 2023-24 FA Cup.
He is already permitted to negotiate with overseas clubs, with AC Milan understood to have made contact during the January window. Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Qadsiah — now managed by Brendan Rodgers — are also said to be monitoring his situation.
While De Ligt has developed into a defensive leader, the Dutchman may now face stiff competition for his place upon returning from injury, given Maguire’s solid form alongside Martinez.
Former United defender Wes Brown recently endorsed the idea of a renewal, stating: “If Amorim were still in the job then Maguire definitely wouldn’t be getting a new contract but Michael Carrick’s come in and Harry’s playing and you’ve De Ligt and Yoro and some fantastic young defenders too who have excelled. So it’s a big decision. I think if it was up to Michael, he’d love to keep him because I think he’s proven he can get the job done. It’s as simple as that.
“The way Harry’s playing at the moment, I’m sure there will be chats going on behind the scenes where other teams will be very interested in signing him up in the summer.”
