Maya Jama and Manchester City defender Ruben Dias have reportedly been left “devastated” after their Cheshire home was broken into while both were away on work commitments.
The burglary took place on January 28, with a “number of items” stolen from the property while it was unoccupied.
[BBC reports] that Cheshire Police have opened an investigation into the incident. A spokesperson said:
“Shortly after 11.10pm on Wednesday 28 January, police received reports of a burglary at an address in Alderley Edge. Officers attended and found entry had been made to the property and a number of items had been stolen. Enquiries are currently ongoing.”
Dias was attending Manchester City’s Champions League match against Galatasaray at the Etihad Stadium on the night of the break-in, while Jama was in South Africa filming Love Island All-Stars.
The Portugal international, who is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, is said to have returned home to find several rooms ransacked before contacting police.
[The Sun reports] that the couple were deeply shaken by the incident. A source said:
“They are devastated. The house is the first they have moved into as a couple and is very special to them.
“Thankfully, neither was at home, but they are very upset that their personal space has been invaded. They love the house because it is tucked away down a very quiet street with no passing traffic.”
The report adds that the burglary is believed to be linked to so-called “away day gangs”, with footballers’ homes targeted while players are involved in high-profile fixtures.
Dias and Jama’s property is located in Alderley Edge, a popular area among Premier League players, and is said to feature high-end security measures that were still bypassed.
