Joe Cole believes Cristiano Ronaldo could keep playing “at least into his mid-40s” calling the Portugal captain “a phenomenon” who’s “defying medical science.”

Speaking to Paddy Power, the former England midfielder said: “When he was 35, I said he’ll play at least into his mid-40s, and people thought I was mad. I’m telling you, he will. He’s still scoring goals.”

Cole added that Ronaldo’s move to Saudi Arabia has allowed him to extend his career. “He’s in the Saudi league, and he’s banging in goals,” he said. “When he plays for Portugal, he’ll still score. So, unfortunately for Ireland, I think this is going to be a convincing victory for Portugal. 4-0.”

Ronaldo, now 40, has scored five goals in six matches for Al-Nassr this season. The Saudi club sit unbeaten after four league games, boosted by summer signings including Joao Felix, Kingsley Coman, and Inigo Martinez.

Last season, Ronaldo dismissed claims he was chasing 1,000 career goals, saying: “Guys, let’s enjoy the moment. I’m not chasing 1,000. If it happens, perfect. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t.”

Portugal will next face Ireland and Hungary as they look to secure World Cup qualification, with Ronaldo still leading the line for his country.
