The Magpies, having recently appointed David Hopkinson as CEO, tasked him with finding a sporting director ahead of the January transfer window.
Head coach Eddie Howe is said to welcome the idea of bringing in Wilson, who previously worked with Rangers.
Wilson, while reluctant to leave Forest in a difficult position, reportedly believes he can help improve Newcastle and would play a key role if the club were to back Howe’s future transfer plans.

The move is backed by both Howe and PIF, with discussions now focused on when Forest will agree to release Wilson from his current contract.
After a swift exit through the interview zone on Sunday, Wilson could soon be walking through the doors of St James’ Park in the opposite direction.
