Casemiro explains long-time name error

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro has revealed that his name has been spelled incorrectly since his early days at Sao Paulo and he never changed it out of superstition.

The Brazilian said a printing error during one of his first matches for Sao Paulo led to the misspelling “Casemiro” instead of “Casimiro.”

Speaking to La Repubblica, he said: “For everyone, I will always be Casemiro… It’s all Sao Paulo’s fault. It all started when I played one of my first matches for Sao Paulo… They accidentally wrote my name with an ‘e’ on the shirt. I played very well.”

“I’m a very superstitious person. I told the club: ‘There’s no need to change it — things are going well.’ It was a one-match mistake, and now I’ll carry it with me forever.”

The name stuck as he rose through Real Madrid, Brazil, and now Manchester United.

After joining United in 2022, Casemiro quickly became a fan favourite for his leadership and experience. Despite criticism last season, he has regained form under Ruben Amorim, who reportedly views him as key to United’s rebuild.

The 33-year-old remains vital for club and country, and with Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti’s backing, could captain the Selecao if Neymar is sidelined for the 2026 World Cup.

Casemiro has been called up for Brazil’s October friendlies against South Korea and Japan before returning to England for United’s Premier League clash with Liverpool.
