Loftus-Cheek “one of a kind” – Gotti

Former Chelsea assistant coach Luca Gotti has described Ruben Loftus-Cheek as “one of a kind” but admitted the AC Milan midfielder still needs to improve his consistency.

The England international, who earned his first Three Lions call-up in over six years during the September break, has impressed in Serie A after a strong pre-season under Massimiliano Allegri.

THE CONTEXT

Loftus-Cheek joined AC Milan from Chelsea and has quickly established himself as a starter. He scored once in his first two Serie A appearances and looks set for a key role under new coach Massimiliano Allegri.

The midfielder previously spent time at Stamford Bridge, where he played under Maurizio Sarri with Gotti as assistant. That 2018-19 season saw him net 10 goals across all competitions.

BEYOND THE HEADLINES

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, Gotti praised the England international’s technical and physical qualities.

“Ruben is a special guy, really one of a kind,” Gotti said. “He had qualities I’ve never found in any other player. He’s got an incredible shot, perfect timing for runs into the box, and he becomes dominant when he feels the trust of the dressing room.”

The Italian also recalled Loftus-Cheek’s popularity in the Chelsea squad, describing him as kind, respectful, and close to fans. “Once I found him two hours after training, still taking pictures and signing autographs. He told me: ‘I was one of them just a few years ago.’”

WHAT GOTTI SAID

Gotti believes Allegri’s tactical system will help bring out the best in Loftus-Cheek.

“I see him fitting well in Milan’s midfield. He has great bursts and is explosive, but you need to avoid boxing him too much,” he said. “At Chelsea, Sarri’s system gave midfielders freedom to attack, and Ruben benefitted from that.”

However, the coach admitted there are areas the player must still improve.

“Six years have passed, and I still see him a bit behind in some areas. He has to learn to concentrate for the full 90 minutes, keep consistency, and stay effective. When he shines, he’s a joy to watch.”

WHAT NEXT FOR LOFTUS CHEEK?

Loftus-Cheek will aim to continue his strong start when Milan return to Serie A action. With his England recall adding fresh motivation, Allegri will hope the midfielder develops the consistency that Gotti feels is missing from his game.
