Son Heung-min Leaves Tottenham | Spurs Legend Bids Farewell After 10 Years

‘End of an Era’: Son Heung-min Bids Emotional Farewell to Tottenham After 10 Years

Tottenham Hotspur fans are saying goodbye to one of their greatest modern-day icons as Son Heung-min leaves Spurs after a remarkable decade in North London. The South Korean forward departs having made 454 appearances and scored 173 goals since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015.

Former teammate Kevin Wimmer described Son’s exit as “the end of something truly special,” adding: “To stay at a club like Tottenham for 10 years in today’s football is almost unheard of. Sonny is unique – we might never see another like him at Spurs.”

From Record Signing to Spurs Legend

When Tottenham signed the then 23-year-old in 2015 for a reported £22.5 million, Son became the most expensive Asian player in Premier League history. Over the next decade, he cemented himself as a fan favourite with his blistering pace, dazzling footwork and a knack for scoring in big moments.

His unforgettable solo goal against Burnley in 2019, which earned him the FIFA Puskás Award, remains one of the greatest strikes in Premier League history. Son’s consistency also brought individual accolades, including the 2021–22 Premier League Golden Boot, which he shared with Mohamed Salah.

Europa League Glory and Farewell

Son’s departure comes just months after leading Spurs to their long-awaited Europa League triumph over Manchester United – the club’s first major trophy in 17 years. The 33-year-old admitted after the final: “Now I feel like a true legend. To win a trophy with this club means everything.”

A Global Superstar and National Hero

Beyond England, Son is a cultural phenomenon in South Korea. Research suggests almost one in four South Koreans identify as Spurs fans due to his influence. His popularity rivals top K-pop icons like BTS and Blackpink, making him one of the country’s most recognizable figures.

South Korean journalist Sungmo Lee explained: “Son isn’t just a footballer here; he’s a national treasure. His name is everywhere – TV, billboards, even buses. Spurs games are events because of him.”

What’s Next for Son?

Reports indicate Son is in advanced talks with MLS side Los Angeles FC, signalling the next chapter of his career. Despite speculation about coaching, the forward has previously stated he does not plan to move into management and intends to play at the highest level for as long as possible.

As Spurs face life without both Harry Kane and Son Heung-min in just two years, one thing is certain: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will forever echo with memories of the smiling assassin who became a legend.
