Man Utd eye Murillo as Maguire contract decision looms

Manchester United are reportedly assessing potential replacements for Harry Maguire, with the defender approaching the final months of his contract at Old Trafford.

The England centre-back, now 32, is set to become a free agent this summer as United continue to prioritise younger targets in their squad rebuild.

Maguire has been at the club since 2018 and admitted earlier this season that his long-term future remains unclear, despite still valuing his time at United.

He memorably scored the winner against Liverpool at Anfield in October, one of the standout victories of Ruben Amorim’s short-lived reign.

Speaking at the time, Maguire acknowledged he was in the final year of his deal and suggested it could have been his last appearance at Anfield for the club.

United had triggered a one-year extension last summer, keeping him under contract until 2026, but no fresh deal has yet been agreed.

[The Daily Mail reports] that Nottingham Forest centre-back Murillo is among the players being considered by United ahead of next season.

The Brazilian defender is said to be open to a move next summer, despite signing a contract until 2029 and settling with his family in Nottingham.

The report adds that United are preparing for Maguire’s possible departure, though any deal for Murillo would not come cheaply.

Maguire had previously fought his way back into the starting XI after being made available during Erik ten Hag’s tenure, when West Ham showed interest.

Injuries have restricted his involvement this season, with the defender making 10 appearances and scoring twice.

United currently have several centre-back options, including Leny Yoro, Ayden Heaven, Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs De Ligt, leaving Maguire’s future unresolved.

The club are also preparing for Michael Carrick’s interim spell in charge following Amorim’s sacking, with the former midfielder set to begin his tenure in Saturday’s Manchester derby.
