Liverpool 2-1 Wolves Wirtz nets first Reds goal

Liverpool moved into the Premier League top four after a tense 2-1 victory over bottom side Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield.

Florian Wirtz opened his Liverpool account, while Ryan Gravenberch also ended his goal drought as Arne Slot’s side collected three vital points.

The match began with an emotional tribute as the late Diogo Jota’s sons, Dinis and Duarte, walked out with the mascots before kick-off. Liverpool started brightly, with Hugo Ekitike striking the woodwork, while Wolves threatened on the break through Mateus Mane.

The breakthrough arrived late in the first half when Gravenberch fired past Jose Sa, before Ekitike turned provider to set up Wirtz for his first goal since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen.

Wolves, despite their difficult season, responded after the break as Santiago Bueno headed home from a corner to halve the deficit and set up a nervy finale.

Wirtz nearly restored Liverpool’s two-goal cushion after a clever solo run, but Gravenberch dragged his effort wide, while Tolu Arokodare missed a golden chance for Wolves with a free header.

The visitors pushed hard in search of an equaliser, forcing late defensive work from substitute Conor Bradley, but Liverpool held firm to secure the win.

The result extended Liverpool’s unbeaten run to seven league games, while Wolves set an unwanted Premier League record for the longest winless start to a season.
