Marc Cucurella warns Chelsea to cut out red cards before Liverpool clash

Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has urged his teammates to cut out disciplinary lapses, warning the Blues will “suffer” if they continue to pick up red cards. The club have seen three dismissals in their last four matches, with Joao Pedro sent off in the Champions League win over Benfica, and Robert Sanchez and Trevoh Chalobah dismissed in Premier League action.

With Chalobah suspended and injuries to Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo and Levi Colwill, Chelsea face a defensive crisis before Saturday’s clash with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. Cucurella admitted the team cannot keep “shooting themselves in the foot,” referencing the 3-1 defeat to Brighton after leading 1-0 before Chalobah’s sending-off.

“We need to learn that with 10 men we can suffer,” said Cucurella. “It is true we need to learn and not to concede easy goals. We need to keep improving. We have a lot of quality and talent. Every game is a good opportunity to improve things.”

The Spain international, who admits he plays with full intensity, says experienced players must support younger teammates in adapting to tough challenges. He added that Chelsea’s squad is stronger this season and capable of competing with top sides, pointing to last season’s victory over Liverpool.

“We are ready to play these kinds of games and fight for the three points at home,” Cucurella said. “It is a long journey, but every week is a good opportunity to fight for three points.”
