Manchester City crush Manchester United 3-0 in derby

Manchester City issued a brutal reminder of the gulf between them and Manchester United with a commanding 3-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium.

Goals from Phil Foden and Erling Haaland — who struck twice — sealed the win, while Gianluigi Donnarumma impressed on his debut. For Ruben Amorim, however, the result left his Manchester United project in chaos and under intense scrutiny.

The tone was set inside the opening minute when Jeremy Doku created an early chance for Haaland. Moments later, Donnarumma was called into action, producing a sharp save from Benjamin Sesko. United, already under pressure, were left chasing shadows.

City eventually broke through when Doku danced past Luke Shaw and found Foden, whose header left Altay Bayindir with no chance. From then on, Pep Guardiola’s side rarely looked troubled.

HAALAND PUNISHES FRAGILE UNITED

If Foden’s opener exposed United’s soft defending, Haaland’s double underlined it. Early in the second half, the Norwegian brushed Shaw aside with ease before lifting the ball past Bayindir. Later, after capitalizing on a defensive error, Haaland raced clear from halfway and coolly slotted home his second.

The striker has now scored 11 goals this season for club and country, and on another day might have had four.

DONNARUMMA’S STATEMENT SAVE

At 2-0, United briefly threatened a lifeline when Bryan Mbeumo unleashed a crisp volley from close range. Yet Donnarumma, newly signed from PSG, produced a world-class save to his right. It was a decisive moment, ensuring City’s dominance was rewarded with a clean sheet.

UNITED’S GOALKEEPING GAMBLE EXPOSED

Amorim’s summer decision to spend £20m on Senne Lammens — only to bench him — now looks baffling. United appear to have three back-up goalkeepers but no reliable starter. Altay Bayindir’s nervous display only highlighted the contrast with City, who immediately trusted Donnarumma with the derby stage.

AMORIM UNDER SEVERE PRESSURE

City fans taunted Amorim with chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning.” While unlikely, his position is undeniably fragile. United sit 14th in the table with just four points from four games, barely an improvement on last season’s 15th-place finish.

Roy Keane was critical of Shaw’s defending, while the broader consensus is that United lack leaders, cohesion, and belief. With more tough fixtures ahead, Amorim faces an uncertain future.

WHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER UNITED?

United’s next games will be pivotal in determining Amorim’s survival. Already, this season is starting to resemble another wasted campaign, marked by poor decisions and defensive frailty.

For City, meanwhile, the derby win restores momentum after back-to-back league defeats. Guardiola’s side may not yet be title favorites, but they are looking upwards again.
