Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville says the VAR decision to overturn a dramatic late goal in Manchester City’s win over Liverpool “killed one of the moments of the season.”
Rayan Cherki thought he had sealed a 3-1 win for City with a stoppage-time strike from the halfway line, but the goal was ruled out after a VAR check spotted a foul by Erling Haaland on Dominik Szoboszlai in the build-up.
Referee Craig Pawson then had to review an earlier pull by Szoboszlai on Haaland, leading to a red card for the Liverpool midfielder for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.
“That feels so unjust,” Neville said on Sky Sports commentary. “There is no person who would disallow that goal. But it’s going to be disallowed. Talk about killjoy. You have just killed one of the moments of the season.”
He later elaborated on his podcast, arguing the decision removed the “smell of the game” and provided ammunition for critics who believe VAR is damaging football.
