Vinicius Jr apologises after Clasico outburst but omits Xabi Alonso

Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr has issued a public apology for his actions during Sunday’s 2-1 Clasico win over Barcelona but notably failed to mention head coach Xabi Alonso.

The Brazilian forward sparked controversy when he was substituted in the 72nd minute, reacting angrily and storming down the tunnel while shouting, “Always me! I’m leaving the team!” before returning to the bench later in the game.

According to The Athletic, Vinicius has since apologised to his teammates, the club, and president Florentino Pérez — but deliberately excluded Alonso, reportedly feeling “hurt” by the coach’s treatment this season.

Speaking to ESPN, former Uruguay defender Diego Lugano labelled Vinicius’ behaviour a “disgrace,” warning that his “prestige within Real Madrid and Spanish football will drop significantly.”

Former Brazil striker Luis Fabiano also criticised the outburst, calling it “a lack of respect” towards teammates, while ex-Real Madrid winger Steve McManaman told ESPN:

“It’s not about you, it’s about the team… We shouldn’t be talking about someone getting substituted after 75 minutes.”

After reflecting on the incident, Vinicius released a statement saying:

“I want to apologise to all Madridistas for my reaction when I was substituted in the Clasico… Sometimes passion gets the better of me because I always want to win and help my team.”

Despite his apology, tension reportedly remains behind the scenes. Vinicius has scored five goals and provided four assists in La Liga this season but has yet to find the net in Europe, and negotiations over a new contract have stalled.

While his bond with fans remains strong, uncertainty over his long-term future at the Bernabéu continues to grow.
