UEFA approves Barcelona vs Villarreal in Miami

UEFA has reluctantly given the green light for LaLiga’s proposed fixture between Barcelona and Villarreal to be played in Miami. The governing body maintained its opposition to domestic league matches being held abroad but approved the plan on an “exceptional basis,” pending FIFA’s final decision.

UEFA RELUCTANT APPROVAL

Despite its firm stance against domestic league games taking place outside their home countries, UEFA announced on Monday that it had approved LaLiga’s request to host Barcelona vs Villarreal at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium on December 21 or 22. A similar Serie A proposal involving AC Milan and Como in Perth, Australia, also received conditional approval.

FAN OPPOSITION ACROSS EUROPE

UEFA confirmed that its consultations with clubs, leagues, players, and fans revealed widespread resistance to moving league matches abroad. Supporter groups across Europe have voiced concerns about losing the local connection between clubs and their communities.

WHY UEFA AGREED

In a statement, UEFA said it “reiterated its clear opposition” to such games but acknowledged that FIFA’s current regulatory framework remains unclear. This uncertainty led UEFA’s Executive Committee to approve the requests temporarily while urging FIFA to clarify future rules.

NEXT STEPS WITH FIFA

The final call now rests with FIFA, which is still developing updated regulations governing the staging of domestic matches overseas. UEFA stated it will actively work with FIFA to ensure future policies protect “the integrity of domestic competitions and the bond between clubs, supporters, and local communities.”
