Federico Valverde Responds to Position Debate at Real Madrid

Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde has strongly denied claims that he has downed tools, amid growing debate about his best position under manager Xabi Alonso.

Speaking through his official X account, the Uruguayan hit out at “several articles” which he said had damaged his reputation following a shaky start to the season.

Valverde has returned to his natural midfield role this campaign, after covering at right-back last term. With Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dani Carvajal sidelined, questions were raised about whether he should return to the defensive position, where he impressed previously.

Ahead of Los Blancos’ Champions League tie against Kairat Almaty, Valverde admitted the switch back to midfield had been “difficult”, but was clear:

“I wasn’t born to play full-back, I didn’t grow up playing there. It was an emergency situation.”

He added that he would never refuse to play anywhere for the team, but frustration grew after he was left out of the starting XI in that European outing, with cameras catching him looking subdued on the sidelines.

Alonso brushed off suggestions of tension, but criticism persisted, prompting Valverde’s response:

“I’ve played while fractured, injured, and I’ve never complained or asked for a break. I have a good relationship with the coach… I always made it clear that I’m available to perform anywhere, on any trip, and in every game.”

The midfielder, valued at €130m, remains central to Madrid’s plans. His omission at right-back in favour of Raul Asencio has raised eyebrows, but Valverde insists his commitment is unquestionable.

Real Madrid face Juventus next in the Champions League, with Valverde expected to play a key role as Alonso continues to shape his squad.
