The French superstar struck in both halves, while Vinicius Junior came off the bench to assist Mbappe before adding a late third himself, ensuring Xabi Alonso’s men claimed back-to-back victories.
Oviedo’s Big Return Overshadowed
For Oviedo, it was a night of celebration as they hosted Madrid in their first top-flight home game in nearly 25 years. A record attendance packed the stadium, but their joy was short-lived as Madrid’s firepower proved too much.
The newly-promoted side did create moments of danger—Leander Dendoncker’s chip forced Thibaut Courtois into action, and Kwasi Sibo struck the post late on—but they couldn’t stop Madrid’s relentless attacking waves.
Mbappe Strikes Before and After the Break
Madrid’s opener came in the 37th minute. Arda Güler slipped a clever ball into Mbappe’s path, and the Frenchman spun sharply before finishing low across goalkeeper Aaron Escandell.
Despite Oviedo protests over a strong challenge from Aurelien Tchouameni in the build-up, the goal stood.
Mbappe doubled his tally in the 83rd minute, latching onto a disguised pass from Vinicius Jr before calmly slotting home.
Vinicius Responds From the Bench
Dropped to the bench for Rodrygo, Vinicius responded perfectly, changing the game after being introduced on the hour mark. He assisted Mbappe’s second before sealing the night in stoppage time with a composed finish after being played through by Brahim Diaz.
“I make decisions that are good for the team,” coach Xabi Alonso said post-match. “We have more than 20 players who need to feel important, and Vinicius showed his quality tonight.”
