Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has offered a robust defence of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in German football, pushing back against recent waves of criticism regarding its implementation.
Ahead of his side’s Bundesliga fixture against Werder Bremen, Kompany shared his perspective, drawing on his experiences in England and Belgium. He suggested that the frequency of VAR intervention in Germany is comparatively lower.
“It was always a topic in England as well. We have the technology available. I am always someone who wants to use the technology as best as possible,” Kompany stated.
“I think VAR in Germany isn’t that bad. I don’t think it intervenes too often. Compared with England or Belgium, it seems less here in Germany.”
The Bayern boss acknowledged that there are “different ways to view situations” but strongly advocated for a path of refinement rather than abandonment.
“You should stick with the technology and continue to develop it,” he emphasised, highlighting the importance of improving the system for the future of the game.
