Bayern Munich shocked by Augsburg as Bundesliga leaders suffer first defeat

Bayern Munich suffered their first Bundesliga defeat of the season on Saturday, losing 2-1 to Augsburg at the Allianz Arena in a result that stunned the home crowd and ended Augsburg’s long winless run in the fixture.

The league leaders dominated possession from the opening minutes and controlled the tempo, but were punished by Augsburg’s disciplined defending and sharp moments in key areas. Despite enjoying 74 percent of the ball by half-time, Bayern went into the break trailing.

Bayern pushed forward early, with Luis Díaz, Lennart Karl and Michael Olise all testing Augsburg’s back line. However, the visitors stayed compact in a deep 5-4-1 shape and absorbed sustained pressure.

Against the run of play, Augsburg took the lead in the 23rd minute. A corner caused problems in Bayern’s box, and Hiroki Ito rose above the defence to head in and silence the stadium.

Augsburg remained dangerous on the counter despite Bayern’s dominance. Han-Noah Massengo came close before the interval, while Robin Fellhauer struck the crossbar with the final action of the first half, increasing Bayern’s frustration.

After the break, Bayern struggled to turn possession into clear chances. Anton Kade failed to take advantage of an early mistake from goalkeeper Jonas Urbig, and several promising attacks broke down in the final third. Head coach Vincent Kompany was visibly frustrated on the touchline as the pressure failed to bring an equaliser.

Augsburg sealed the upset in the 80th minute. A free-kick caused confusion in Bayern’s defence, and with multiple defenders failing to track runners, Massengo found space and finished calmly to make it 2-0.

Bayern pushed forward late and managed to pull one goal back, but the comeback never materialised.

Despite the defeat, Bayern remain top of the Bundesliga, still holding a commanding 12-point lead. Augsburg’s win lifts them six points clear of the relegation zone and provides a major confidence boost.
