Xabi Alonso has confirmed he will speak with Vinicius Junior following the forward’s furious reaction to being substituted during Real Madrid’s 2-1 El Clasico victory over Barcelona on Sunday.

Goals from Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham sealed a crucial win at the Bernabeu, sending Madrid five points clear at the top of La Liga. But Vinicius’ anger at being withdrawn in the 72nd minute stole post-match headlines.

The Brazilian reacted furiously when his number came up, throwing his arms in frustration before walking straight down the tunnel instead of taking his place on the bench.

He eventually returned to sit among the substitutes for the closing stages as tensions escalated late on when Pedri’s red card sparked a heated confrontation between players from both sides.

Vinicius was involved in that melee and had to be restrained by a member of Madrid’s staff as tempers flared with Alejandro Balde, Lamine Yamal and Raphinha.

After the match, Alonso admitted there would be a discussion with his star man but downplayed any ongoing tension.

“Vini’s character? There are different personalities in any dressing room,” Alonso said. “Right now we will enjoy the win, then we’ll have a conversation, for sure.”

Vinicius’ reaction continues a pattern of frustration when substituted. He showed similar anger after being replaced in the 77th minute of Madrid’s 2-0 win over Espanyol last month despite providing an assist.

Alonso later defended his decision: “It’s true that he came off when he was feeling best, but we needed fresh players. Vinicius wanted to stay on because he was feeling good. It happens to everyone, but I’m very happy with Vinicius’s performance.”

The Brazilian’s starting spot has come under scrutiny this season, having been benched for the Champions League opener against Marseille and league matches versus Getafe and Oviedo.

Vinicius will aim to respond on the pitch when Real Madrid host Valencia next weekend. He has scored in each of Los Blancos’ last four home meetings with Carlos Corberan’s side.

Madrid, unbeaten at home this season, will look to extend their perfect Bernabeu record as they continue their push for the La Liga title.
