Samuel Umtiti retires from football at 31

Samuel Umtiti has officially retired from football at the age of 31. The French defender, who scored the decisive goal in the 2018 World Cup semi-final, confirmed the news with an emotional message on Instagram.

Career Highlights

Born in Cameroon and raised in Lyon, Samuel Umtiti began his professional journey with Lyon before joining Barcelona in 2016. At Camp Nou, he won two La Liga titles and three Copa del Rey trophies, becoming a key figure in the club’s defence.

World Cup Hero

Samuel Umtiti’s finest moment came on the international stage. He scored the only goal in France’s 2018 World Cup semi-final win over Belgium, helping Didier Deschamps’ side lift the trophy in Russia.

He becomes the fifth member of that winning squad to retire, following Raphael Varane, Blaise Matuidi, Adil Rami, and Steve Mandanda.

Final Years

Recurring knee injuries heavily impacted Umtiti’s later career. After a loan spell at Lecce in Italy, he signed with Lille in January 2024 but played only a handful of matches before deciding to hang up his boots.

In his farewell message, he wrote: “After an intense career with ups and downs, the time has come to say goodbye… I gave EVERYTHING with passion and I regret NOTHING.”
