Kylian Mbappe is determined to overtake Olivier Giroud as France all-time leading scorer as Les Bleus prepare to face Azerbaijan in World Cup qualifying.

The Real Madrid star has 52 goals in 92 international appearances just six behind Olivier Giroud record 57 for France.

Speaking before the match, Mbappe said: “I can score goals against anyone. Every match has its own reality… maybe I’ll beat [Giroud] tomorrow, who knows?”

France captain Mbappe admitted he expects to break the record soon but insisted it will “come naturally.”

His participation against Azerbaijan, however, remains uncertain after he suffered a minor ankle sprain during Real Madrid 3-1 win over Villarreal last weekend.

Despite the knock, Mbappe was called up by Didier Deschamps and confirmed he would return to team training on Thursday.

“I want to play, the coach wants me to play, I don’t think there will be any problems,” he said. “I feel good… it’s the last test but I’m not particularly worried.”

Mbappe has been in electric form this season, scoring 14 goals in 10 games for Real Madrid.
