Kylian Mbappe endured a rare off-night as two of his goals were ruled out by VAR in Real Madrid’s 2-1 win over Mallorca, with one of the decisions sparking debate over just how tight offside calls have become.
MADRID’S STAR DENIED TWICE
The Frenchman thought he had given Madrid an early lead, only for the referee to overturn the strike after VAR flagged his shoulder and sleeve marginally ahead of the last defender. Later in the first half, he found the net again but was caught clearly offside, leaving him empty-handed despite his attacking threat.
MADRID STILL GET THE JOB DONE
While Mbappe cut a frustrated figure, Los Blancos didn’t slip up. Arda Guler broke the deadlock before Vinicius Junior sealed the points, ensuring Madrid’s perfect start to the season remained intact.
WHAT IT MEANS GOING FORWARD
Mbappe’s scoreless outing was his first blank of the campaign after three goals in two games. He will be eager to get back on track when Madrid face Real Sociedad at Anoeta after the international break — a test that will demand his best.
