Lionel Messi finally reveals what will decide if he plays at 2026 World Cup

Lionel Messi has opened up on the key factor that will decide whether he plays for Argentina at the 2026 World Cup.

The Inter Miami superstar will turn 39 during the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico, and has admitted his participation is not yet guaranteed.

Messi, who has transformed football in America since joining MLS in 2023, said his decision will depend entirely on his fitness and how he feels heading into next season.

He told NBC: “It’s something extraordinary to be able to be in a World Cup, and I would like to be there. I’ll assess that on a day-to-day basis when I start preseason next year with Inter Miami and see if I can really be 100 per cent.”

Messi added: “We’re coming off winning the last World Cup, and being able to defend it again is spectacular. Hopefully, God will allow me to do it once again.”

Since moving to the U.S., Messi has revolutionised Inter Miami, leading them to the Leagues Cup in 2023, the Supporters’ Shield in 2024, and winning the 2025 MLS Golden Boot with 29 goals. He also recently signed a contract extension through 2028.

Despite his success in America, the Argentina captain insists he’ll make his World Cup call based on both physical and mental readiness. “I’ve always said that I’ll base my decision on how I feel day to day,” he said. “Honestly, I felt really good during the year. I’m happy living in Miami, as is my family.”

Before any World Cup decision, Messi remains focused on club duties. Inter Miami are in the MLS playoffs and began their best-of-three series against Nashville with a 3–1 win, where Messi scored twice and collected his Golden Boot award before kickoff.
