Cristiano Ronaldo sets new World Cup qualifying record in Hungary draw

Cristiano Ronaldo made history with a record-breaking brace but Portugal were held to a dramatic 2-2 draw by Hungary, missing the chance to seal qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

The 40-year-old struck twice to reach 41 World Cup qualifying goals surpassing former Guatemala striker Carlos Ruiz’s record of 39.

Hungary took an early lead through Attila Szalai, before Ronaldo equalised in the 22nd minute, converting Nelson Semedo’s cross from close range.

The Portugal captain then put his side ahead just before half-time with his 948th career goal, finishing calmly from Nuno Mendes’ delivery.

But in stoppage time, Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai scored to snatch a point for Hungary and keep their group hopes alive.

With England beating Latvia 5-0 to qualify from Group K, Portugal remain five points clear at the top of Group F with two matches to go.

Their next chance to confirm qualification comes on 13 November against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin.

Ronaldo, who has already lifted the European Championship and Nations League with Portugal, continues to chase the one major honour missing from his glittering international career the World Cup.
