Alexander Isak reacts as Sweden sack Jon Dahl Tomasson after World Cup qualifying collapse

Liverpool striker Alexander Isak faces a World Cup nightmare after Sweden sacked head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson following a disastrous qualifying campaign.

Tomasson was dismissed after a 1-0 defeat to Kosovo left Sweden with just one point from four qualifiers and all but ended their chances of reaching next year’s tournament.

Despite starting Isak and Arsenal forward Viktor Gyokeres, Sweden failed to score for the third time in four games, having also lost to Switzerland over the weekend.

The Swedish Football Association confirmed Tomasson’s departure on Tuesday, only hours after the latest defeat.

SFA chairman Simon Astrom said: “The decision is based on the fact that the men’s national team has not delivered the results we hoped for. There is still a chance for a playoff, and our responsibility is to ensure we have the best possible conditions to reach a World Cup final. In this regard, we believe new leadership is required.”

Isak, who played the full 90 minutes, admitted frustration after another poor performance.

“It’s a bit of a crisis situation and that’s clear,” the Liverpool striker said. “I don’t know what we’re going to do. But it’s all too bad.”

Sweden must now win their final two qualifiers against Switzerland and Slovenia and hope Kosovo slip up to have any chance of reaching the play-offs.

But Isak insisted the blame is shared among the entire squad, saying: “We players are so f—— dissatisfied. We take a lot of responsibility ourselves. No one is approved, not us players, not the team. And that of course includes the coach and everything around.”
