Messi reveals condition to play 2026 World Cup

Lionel Messi has expressed his strong desire to represent Argentina at the 2026 World Cup, saying it would be “wonderful” to defend the title he won in Qatar but only if he feels physically ready.

[Speaking to Fabrizio Romano] the Inter Miami superstar said he wants to “contribute and be important” for Lionel Scaloni’s side, and will only go to the tournament if he feels he can perform at his best.

“Obviously, I have so much desire and excitement to be there,” Messi said. “But I want to go there feeling good about myself, so that I can contribute and be important.”

Messi has not played down his ambition to feature in a sixth World Cup, with the 38-year-old still in sensational form. The forward has scored 39 goals in 44 appearances for Inter Miami this year and continues to shine for Argentina, netting twice in four matches in 2025.

Reflecting on the prospect of playing matches in the United States, Messi said: “The World Cup is always special… and I think it’s going to be a special World Cup. It would be wonderful to be able to be in another one and defend the last world title.”

The Argentine also spoke about his happiness at Inter Miami, having recently signed a new three-year deal. “It was an easy decision,” he said. “I’m very happy here enjoying myself, feeling good physically and helping the club grow.”

Messi added that winning the MLS Cup would be “spectacular” and “extraordinary” for both the club and himself, calling it the next major goal.

With 195 international caps and 114 goals for Argentina, Messi could surpass 200 appearances next summer if he maintains his form. For now, the legend insists his body will decide whether he plays but his heart clearly wants one more shot at World Cup glory.
