The German Football Association (DFB) has publicly ruled out boycotting this summer’s FIFA World Cup, despite internal discussions about taking a stand against former U.S. President Donald Trump.
In a statement, the federation emphasized its belief in the “unifying power of sport” and said its goal is to strengthen football’s global role, not hinder it. The option was raised after DFB vice-president Oke Göttlich suggested a boycott should be “seriously considered.”
“A boycott is not currently under consideration,” the DFB confirmed, adding it maintains contact with political and security authorities. The federation stated that such sports policy debates should remain internal.
The decision comes amid ongoing concerns in Germany over Trump’s recent actions. Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka recently stated the political climate made him feel “not only German but also European.”
Germany will participate in the tournament, drawn in a group with Curaçao, Côte d’Ivoire, and Ecuador.
