UEFA Champions League

The UEFA Champions League play-off draw has been completed, setting up a series of high-pressure two-legged ties as Europe’s elite battle for places in the round of 16.

With eight teams already qualified directly, 16 sides must now survive the most unforgiving phase of the new competition format, where every tie produces one qualifier and one early exit.

The headline pairing sees Real Madrid drawn against Benfica, a repeat of their recent league-phase meeting. PSG face Monaco in an all-French showdown, while Juventus are paired with Galatasaray, reviving uncomfortable memories for the Italian side.

Inter will meet Bodø/Glimt, Atlético Madrid take on Club Brugge, and Newcastle face Qarabag, with tricky away legs expected. Elsewhere, Atalanta were drawn against Borussia Dortmund, and Bayer Leverkusen will play Olympiacos.

The first legs of the play-off round will be played on February 17 and 18, with return fixtures on February 24 and 25. Higher-ranked teams from the league phase will host the decisive second leg.

With no margin for error and no second chances, the Champions League now moves into its most ruthless stage.
