Bayern Munich’s winning start to the Bundesliga season ended on Saturday with a shock 2-1 home defeat to FC Augsburg in the 19th round, their first league loss of the campaign.
After the game, Joshua Kimmich openly accepted Bayern’s shortcomings and admitted the result was fair based on the performance.
“Today we have to fully accept it,” Kimmich said.“The defeat was by no means undeserved. Augsburg didn’t dominate us, but Bayern didn’t deserve the win either.”
The midfielder pointed to a lack of mentality and sharpness as the key reasons behind the setback at the Allianz Arena.
“There was a lack of hunger,” he explained. “For long stretches, we didn’t look fresh, neither in our build-up play nor in our counter-pressing.”
Kimmich said Bayern struggled to impose themselves and allowed Augsburg to gain the upper hand late in the match. “In the final phase, Augsburg were a bit more tenacious,” he added.
The 29-year-old did not hide his frustration with the overall display, stressing that Bayern failed to reach their usual standards.
“Not top-level at all,” Kimmich said.“It wasn’t a game where we created chances desperately. It lacked intensity, sharpness, and punch.”
He admitted the disappointment would linger as Bayern reflect on their first domestic defeat of the season.“The disappointment will last a few days,” Kimmich concluded.
Despite remaining near the top of the Bundesliga table, the result serves as a warning for Bayern as they look to respond quickly in the coming fixtures.
