Real Madrid‘s Brahim Diaz has admitted his “soul hurts” after his stoppage-time Panenka miss handed Senegal victory in a chaotic Africa Cup of Nations final.
The 26-year-old, tournament top scorer with five goals, won a controversial late penalty for Morocco only for Edouard Mendy to save his tame effort. Senegal then struck in extra time through Pape Gueye to seal a dramatic 1-0 win on Sunday at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
Diaz took full responsibility in an emotional Instagram post: “Yesterday I failed and I take full responsibility. I apologize from the bottom of my heart. It will be hard for me to recover, because this wound doesn’t heal easily… but I will try.”
