Fernandes leads Premier League in creativity

Bruno Fernandes’ influence at Manchester United has been underlined by two remarkable statistics revealed by Opta.

The Portuguese midfielder has led the Red Devils’ resurgence under Ruben Amorim, guiding them to three straight wins that lifted United to sixth in the Premier League level on points with Manchester City and above Liverpool.

Opta revealed that Fernandes has created more chances than any other player in the Premier League this season, with 24 opportunities in nine matches. Everton’s Jack Grealish sits second with 24, followed by Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo.

562 – Bruno Fernandes has created the most chances in the Premier League this season (24) – since his Man Utd debut in February 2020, he's created 115 more chances than any other player across Europe's big-five leagues (562). Orchestrator. pic.twitter.com/AhNfAV5Jqb

What makes the record more impressive is Fernandes’ deeper role this season, as he now operates in Amorim’s midfield two rather than his usual No.10 position following the arrivals of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.

Despite his creativity, Fernandes has just one assist to his name a cross for Harry Maguire’s winner in United’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool, their first win at Anfield in a decade.

Opta’s second statistic shows Fernandes has crafted 562 chances since joining United in February 2020, 115 more than any other player across Europe’s top five leagues during that time.

These figures highlight how vital Fernandes is to United’s success and how different recent seasons might have looked had more of his chances been converted.

Speaking after the 4-2 win over Brighton, Fernandes praised the club’s new signings:

“We need big characters, not just good players. Cunha and Bryan both have the confidence and quality this club demands.”

United now eye a fourth straight league win when they visit Nottingham Forest on Saturday. Amorim’s side last achieved that feat in February 2024, and with Forest under new manager Sean Dyche, another test awaits in their climb up the table.
