Liverpool have suffered another setback as Ibrahima Konate has withdrawn from the France squad due to a thigh injury.

The centre-back was forced off during last weekend 2-1 defeat to Chelsea and has now returned to Merseyside after missing France 3-0 win over Azerbaijan.

Konate initially joined Didier Deschamps’ squad and took part in light training but did not feature on Friday, with France unwilling to take any risks before Monday’s World Cup qualifier against Iceland.

Speaking after the defeat at Stamford Bridge, Liverpool boss Arne Slot said:

“I don’t know if it is a big injury, but what I do know is he limped a little bit and when I asked him he said he felt his quad a little bit. Then, for me, all alarm bells go off because in another sprint you never know if that is going to go good.”

Liverpool will hope the Frenchman recovers in time for next Sunday meeting with Manchester United at Anfield, which begins a demanding run of three games in six days for Slot’s side.
