Manchester United have opened talks with Harry Maguire over a new contract, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Romano revealed on X that “Manchester United are in talks with Harry Maguire over new deal with existing contract due to expire in June,” adding that a face-to-face meeting took place recently and more discussions will follow.

[Romano reports] the club are happy with Maguire’s “contribution and leadership” as they seek to extend his stay at Old Trafford.

The 32-year-old’s current contract expires at the end of the season, meaning he could speak to overseas clubs from January if no agreement is reached.

While Maguire has not been a regular starter under Ruben Amorim, he has featured in six of United’s seven Premier League games so far.

The England international, who joined United from Leicester in 2019 for a reported £80 million, came close to joining West Ham in 2023 but chose to remain and fight for his place.

Speaking to ESPN, Maguire confirmed: “I think there were a couple of clubs who maybe enquired… and I think they got a quick response. I’m pretty sure the club have made it aware this summer that I can’t leave on any terms.”

He added that United are “in a good place” under new leadership, praising Jason Wilcox and Ruben Amorim for taking the club “in the right direction.”

United are eager to finalise Maguire’s future swiftly, with Amorim still under pressure to deliver consistent results despite backing from Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
